How It Came to Be

From its construction at the turn of the millennium to its years as a celebrated Knoxville estate, the story of a one-of-a-kind home.

Construction

Built between 1993 and 2000

Villa Collina rose along the Tennessee River over the better part of a decade, with construction taking place between 1993 and 2000. The result was a home of European inspiration and American ambition — a 40,250-square-foot villa that would become the largest private residence in Tennessee and one of the largest in the country. Its scale and craftsmanship made it a landmark almost from the day it was completed.

A New Chapter

Villa Collina renewed

In its later years, the estate entered a period of renewal under owner Eric W. Barton. A series of thoughtful upgrades — from technology and audio-video systems to refreshed interiors and amenities — modernized the mansion while honoring its grandeur. Documented as “Villa Collina Renewed,” this era brought new life to the home and reintroduced it to the Knoxville community, both as a private residence and as a venue for memorable gatherings.

It was during this time that the mansion became known not only for its size, but for the events and causes it supported — a story told on our legacy page.

A home worth remembering

For nearly two decades, Villa Collina stood as one of Knoxville's most recognizable homes — admired from the river and known far beyond the city. Explore the mansion itself, or read about what ultimately became of it.
